The International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) is an annual celebration of the co-operative movement observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Co-operative Alliance. Co-operatives around the world celebrate the day in various fashions and each year the organizing institutions agree on a theme for the celebrations. This is year, on July 4th, the theme is “Cooperatives for Climate Action” (#Coops4ClimateAction), chosen specifically to address and support Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on Climate Action.

The term climate change indicates we will most likely experience more intense storms, droughts, floods, and ocean acidification thus, giving credence to the Global Warming phenomenon. It will impact people’s livelihoods around the world, especially the most disadvantaged groups such as small-scale farmers, women, youth, indigenous peoples and ethnic minorities, who have to cope with extreme natural disasters and degradation of natural resources. This year the IDC will focus on the contribution of cooperatives to combating climate change. CLIMBS Life & General Insurance Cooperative joins the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) in celebrating the theme of the International Day of Cooperatives by reminding everyone: Climate change is real; pretending that it is not happening is going against everyone’s best interest. How have you helped our planet? What are you doing to act against climate change? In our little ways, let us show that we care for the only planet where we live.
