Think Big

“Think little goals and expect little achievements. Think big goals and win big success.” – David Joseph Schwartz, The Magic of Thinking Big.

Former Deputy House Speaker Pablo Garcia, the keynote speaker of CLIMBS 43rd General Assembly held last April 25, 2015 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City emphatically urged coop leaders in the country to “wake up and dare to think big.”

We believe that Garcia’s clarion call is imperative and very timely, especially with the full implementation of the Asean Economic Integration this year, which will surely dish out tremendous challenges to the business community and even to the coop sector.

But with or without the integration, the market of cooperatives has already been invaded by commercial investors, as pointed out by Garcia.

“It is now a game of survival of the fittest. Competition is the name of the game,” Garcia pointed out.

For him, there is no excuse for cooperative not to significantly grow and become competitive, considering the empowerment the coop sector received, through the constitution and other laws of the land.

He cited tax excemptions and other favours, extended to cooperatives by the 1987 constitution and Republic Act 9520, among other laws.

Although there are reservations coming from coop leaders, with regard to the implementation and interpretation of some provisions, especially of RA9520, it cannot also be denied that indeed there are many benefits that can be derived from the statute.

But differences of interpretation of the provisions of the law should not derail the realization on the necessity for cooperatives to become aggressive, dynamics and risk takers to become big.

As Donald Trump said: “I like thinking big. If you’re going to be thinking anything, you might as well think big.”
